MNDrive faculty Julianna Abel, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, conducts research into smart knitted structures using shape memory alloys. These have enormous potential as smart textile actuators, exhibiting a mechanical or dimensional change in response to a stimulus, such as a temperature change or electrical current.
Abel and David Pui, Distinguished McKnight University Professor, are the University of Minnesota's lead researchers for a nationwide "smart fabrics" initiative.
